Q: Volkswagen Jetta info?
Ok, so I want to get the new 2010 Jetta TDI Cup Edition, or a 2005 or newer Jetta GLI. (both in 6-speed manual)

What I want to do is swap out the drive-train on the 2010 TDI or the GLI for an AWD. But I would also want to swap the GLI engine out for a TDI motor.

Are any of these swaps possible? If so, what would it take to get the project done?
FYI: cost is not an issue. even though the project may seem impractical, i just want to know what it would take.

to Richard…thanks for the extremely negative answer…i said money was NOT AN ISSUE and i can get an AWD Bora from the UK.

A: I will try to answer you it little more positively ! It would not make sense to do what you are talking about other than the fact the “you did it” To obtain the parts you need would be extremely difficult and you may end up half way through the job wanting and been unable to get a specific part. I had a an Audi 90 Quattro a number of years ago and the extra work that went into the car as compared to the Audi Coupe GT I had before, well lets say it was chalk and cheese. For a start you have a prop shaft running down a transmission tunnel you may not have enough clearance on the FWD version. The rear end will have a sub frame which has to bolt up to the body work, those mountings will not be present on the FWD car. Those are just the immediate problems, but yes with a big heart and much knowledge anything can be done. I have seen a Mk1 Golf with a 16valve engine in the front and another one in the back which was driving the rear wheels so your notion is simpicity compared to that.

Q: First Time VW Buyer-Need Help?
My wife and I are looking into getting a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and we were wondering how reliable they are. We have never owned a VW before and we want something that is going to be headache free. Also, this would be our first diesel car and we are not sure how easy, or hard, they are to do basic maintenance on (oil changes, radiator flushes, etc.). I know they come with a 3-year maintenance free plan, but I would much rather do basic maintenance myself to make sure it gets done right. So, what do you all think of the reliability of VWs? Should we go for it or pass?

A: You do not state which country you are in, I assume UK if you are looking at a TDI. For a start, the Golf will usually hold its residual value better than the Jetta despite it being almost identical. I have a 2005 Golf diesel estate which as done 120k miles. It is a delight to drive, the clutch is light everything feels nice and tight and rattle free. We have a 2006 Mk5 Golf TDI at work which has the DSG gearbox. Again it is rattle free and despite 90 k miles it is smooth and superb to drive. That car has just had to have a new gearbox.However, an employee who used it I fear put it into park whilst it was travelling. This means he went through the reverse gear first ! I have been unable to prove this.I recently spoke to a man who bought a new Golf TDI in 1999, it now has 208 k on the clock and still has the original clutch and exhaust ! There is a saying that a gallon of oil is the cheapest mechanic going. This is especially true with VW, if you do not do the oil changes as per the schedule then the engine life will be reduced. The oil filter is a paper element and you need a sizeable socket to unscrew the cover, the engine floor panel has “Torx” type screws, that panel has to be removed to carry out the “Drain” operation. I like to leave mine to drain overnight or at least for several hours. Just another point, this forum attracts people who will rubbish VW or anything else for that matter, the Golf has just won two seperate awards in the “What Car” magazine. You need to go for a test drive and I am sure you will be delighted.
